2009

I am not sure it is possible to write an end of the year post and not sound trite, but I'll take a stab at it anyway. If I fail, forgive me, my creative juices seem to be partially blocked by a giant bump in my belly.

This year may very well have been the most challenging and rewarding year of my life. I feel like I was tested to my limit in more than one instance and shown that I have the strength, support, and love around me to go forward.

We lost a baby in late February and I had surgery to complete that process in early March. That, my friends, was the hardest thing I have ever done. I have tears in my eyes as I type this, because I know that if we had that baby, we would not be having Nash. It's such a strange thought, but I know that we were spared something even more difficult and in return given a huge blessing. You could not have told me this at the time though. My pain was deep and caused me to sit against my bathroom door and sob many, many nights. Without KP's strength to pull me back up, literally, and ease me back into normal life, I fear I would still be a red-eyed, slobbery mess. Plus, he knocked me up again, and this time, our little Munchkin grew and grew, and is still growing.

On the job front, I had a great year, after a terrible 2008. With a little help from the Obama stimulus package, I had lots of great buyers, learned tons, and dealt with my best and worst clients. My patience has been tested, checked, and usually used to it's fullest. I will never forget the words of my old boss, "Amy, react before you respond." I am still practicing that.

KP's year job-wise has been a bit more challenging, but it seems that each of us was hit in separate years of this recession. Thankfully, it didn't all happen at once. Thankfully times two, we have great families that didn't let us starve. Plus, he's recently had a few super-cool opportunities and some new projects are slated for the new year.

On other fronts, this year also included coming much closer to completion on KP's parents' Austin home. Something about a grand-child and a bossy daughter-in law with a February deadline made things progress at a faster rate. We got to spend lots of time with our families; watching KP bond with our nephews literally warms my heart. Seeing him build and play with Luke and hold Davis makes me even more certain that he will be an amazing father. Mac, the youngest Pug, finally settled down and started acting like a Paczosa dog, though he still has to mark new things. Zeus and Gus continued to be perfect dogs for us, though we had a few health scares this year that made me realize that I love those four-legged children even more than I thought. We went to California and Iowa and spent great time with friends. We went to the beach, had a big fight (over hamburgers), found out I was pregnant, and the hormones started raging. In fact, those pesky hormones tested our marriage and my husband, who typically has the patience of a monk. I have more respect for him now than I ever have. He is a saint, but don't tell him. No, he still doesn't read this!

What made the rest of the year all worth it, is being 34 weeks pregnant with our first son: Nash. We cannot contain our excitement. We watch and feel for his movements, talk about what kind of person he will be, dream that he loves vegetables and all of our cheesiness. We brainstorm vacations at certain points of his life and make promises to each other about how we will be the best people and parents we can be so that he grows up to feel as loved, talented, smart, and worthy as KP and I do. That's a huge nod to our parents.

In 2010, I look forward to being a Mom, spending good time with our friends and families, meeting all of the 2010 babies that are on the horizon, selling some real estate, watching KP make more art, hopefully taking off this baby weight, having a glass of wine, and starting a new decade, as a little family of our own.

As I started this post, this year has been the most challenging and rewarding yet. I imagine with all that is slated for 2010, next year may take this description as well, but I am up for it. With all of your love and support, of course.

Happy New Year!

Flip Camera

I probably won't come up with a Christmas post, because I am lazy, but please see Midge's blog for pics.

I did receive a Flip Video Camera from my Dad (he drew my name for Christmas). I imagine there will be lots of videos of Nashers on this blog in the future, but for now, it's our crazy family!

Above are Luke and Davis, dressed in PJs, getting ready to go home and sleep, all while waiting on Santa Claus. Luke's quite passionate about what he wants. Thankfully, he was a good boy and Santa got him one, and Davis one too (for self-defense).

KP's Mom got a Wii for Christmas. Above is Ade practicing catching fish as a penguin.

Here's Deb hula hooping. Talk about some funny stuff.

And here, my friends, is our little GusGus trying to stay awake. What a busy holiday season it was for the pugs. They played at Mimi and Buddy's and explored the property like big dogs. They spent time at Grandma and Grandpa's and steered clear of their hormonal, yet very cute, dog cousin. Then they came home to go to the vet for their annual shots. These guys are toast and are quite enjoying being in their own domain, lounging.

34 Weeks: A Large Cantaloupe

According to our bulletin, a large cantaloupe weighs about 4 3/4 lbs! I can't believe that my little shrimp is finally gaining some weight. He's also about 18 inches long.

I can feel him everywhere. His movements can be seen grazing across my belly. He's a busy dude. He prefers kicking, stretching, and wiggling, but he throws some punches down toward my pelvis sometimes too. What a sweet boy!

We went to the doctor yesterday for our last 2-week appointment. Beginning next week, I will go every week and start getting "checked." I hear that this is less than pleasant, but I will share the gory details only after I finally get to have a glass of wine or beer.

My blood pressure was a little high yesterday. They took some blood to make sure that all of my organs are still functioning properly, but they did not seem overly concerned. If it is high again next week, we will talk about a different course of action (whatever that means), and if we still can't get it down, we might be meeting Nash sometime around January 20th (37 weeks). I am getting ahead of myself here, I know. Thankfully, he's a decent size and a few more weeks will give his lungs even more time to develop.

We did set up the bassinet this week, which our good dog Mac has already marked. I also found a coming home outfit, made some room in the kitchen for Nash's things, and packed our bag -- well partially anyway.

People keep asking if I am nervous, which of course I am, but not to the extent I thought I would be. I am just nervous about our guy's health and how I am going to pop him out, the latter to a lesser extent.

And finally, how I am feeling. In a word, HUGE. Nash is pretty much right out in front of me. My back only aches after a very long day. My feet hurt. I waddle. I am so thirsty. I cannot catch my breath. My heartburn is trying to turn my esophagus into a three-alarm house fire. And the tired is back, with a vengence. But this time it's different. I can't stand up for long periods of time, but sleeping is not quite as easy, and is interrupted every two or three hours with the need to pee.

I know that's the most complaining I have done on this here blog, but people, it's the reality of an 8 1/2 months pregnant woman. And honestly, there are other issues, but I can't have you all thinking of those in connetion to me. Again, maybe I will share when I get to have a drink.

In the last 2 weeks, I gained 1.8 lbs, according to my doc. I now stand at +32.5 pounds. Damn.

We rearranged the living room, once again, to make room in our bedroom for the baby.

A view from the top. Where'd my feet go?

33 Weeks: A Pineapple

Ouch! Can you imagine delivering a pineapple? Good thing Nash just weighs as much as a pineapple, which is about 4 lbs and he's about 17 inches long.

Because this post is a week late (you know, with traveling, Christmas, and such, I got behind), I am going to cut this short and will promise you a better 34th week post.

Here KP and I are getting ready for dinner with the BDC on December 23rd. We had a delicious meal, and I got to splurge on a breaded chicken and cream sauce dish. Yummm. The company was great; it's always fabulous to spend time with most of your longest-time friends.

Presenting Elf Mimi

My Mom. That's really all I have to say, but for those of you who do no know my Mom, the photo below will explain a lot. She's game for pretty much everything and because she always has fun, people ask her to do some pretty funny stuff.

Let me explain, in the big city of Manvel, there's a Christmas tradition that's been going on for a few years. Some neighbors of my parents LOVE to decorate for Christmas. In fact, they love it so much that they fill, literally, their home full of Christmas trees, singing toys, great smells, and pure holiday cheer. They also have a real sled in their front yard, where children can ask Santa for presents, meet Mrs. Claus, and have some hot chocolate. It's unreal and really cool!

Mimi was asked to be an elf to help show guests through the house to view all of the trees. She did a great job on her first night and has two more nights of Elfhood in her immediate future.

Elf Mimi, in front of her own tree.

Michael Patrick with Santa.

Luke and Davis with Elf Mimi and Santa. As we were pulling up, Luke informed us that he only wanted to stand next to Santa. I think having Mimi there, in full Elfwear, helped the boys get a little closer.

Another pic of Mimi Elf and the Boys.

Me and KP, after a very long day, in front of the rotating tree.

Just look at this dining room! Poinsettias everywhere!

This is a view into the main room. How many trees can you spot?

Sunflower tree in the bathroom?

Hot pink foil tree!

Pink poinsettias in the bedroom!

We loved the big outdoor lights on this tree.

And the huge character ornaments covering this one!
Luke and Davis in front of a blue feather tree. Davis was given two Clementines by Mrs. Claus, which he squished in order to eat a bite (luckily this occurred at his house, outside).

This purple bathroom was my favorite.

Look at the purple tree in the shower! Wow, holiday decadence at its finest.

SueSue Graduates!

SueSue (Lil' Sis) has been working her tail off for years to finally reach this day. She had a full-time job and went to school at night for the last several years too. SueSue, we are full of pride for you. Your accomplishments are amazing and we look forward to seeing what you do in the future.

SueSue is in line here, about to walk across the stage. I'll have to get a better pick of the stage crossing from Midge's camera. Awesome.

Her number 1 and 2 fans, our parents. Luke's showing us a piece of popcorn.

More fan club: Midge, Davis, and Veronica.

And the other end of the row. Donna, TC, Sharon, and Fred were also in attendance.

Look at all the graduates filing in in Minute Maid park. Very cool, in more ways than one. It was COLD in there.

Sweet Baby Dave took a nap on his Daddy and woke up just in time for the yelling for SueSue!

Baby Shower Numero Tres

Last weekend, Amy #1 (#1 because she's older) and Christine hosted a beautiful baby shower for us. Everyone we invited came to shower us with love and baby goodies. It was awesome. Sometimes I get a little anxious about starting a family in a different town than our families, but if the turnout at this shower was any indication, we're going to have lots of support (and baby friends to play with).

The hostesses and muah. Amy #1, on the left on grey, is also preggers, though you can't tell by that tiny bump! She's having a girl in May.

Pretty blue flowers for Nash! Christine's house looked beautiful.

CUPCAKES. Nuff said.

More pretty house/yummy treats photos.

Some of the spread. The food was delicious. And the turkey meatloaf sandwiches...to live for!

A Yellow Submarine shirt from Mimi and Buddy. We received tons of cute clothes: a Nash onsie, a "Danger was Almost my Middle Name" onsie, baby socks, a pair of itty bitty jeans, a cute robot shirt, booties, little pants, a jacket, and bibs. Nash really is going to be one well-dressed little boy.

We also received lots of great gear: the pack n play, vibrating soothing bouncer, towels, bottles, bath toys, night light, diapers, sound machine, baby food maker, lullaby CD, stroller organizer, giraffe stuffed animal, bathtub, safety kit, thermometer, pacis, bath essentials, booster seat, crib sheet, butt paste, and TONS of great books. Oh my! I can't wait until he's here and I can use all of his stuff!

Some of the ladies. My camera has a mind of its own, so this is fuzzy. But, you can see Jean entertaining the crowd. Jean is also preggers. Again, a tiny baby bump on that pregnant lady. She is having a boy in May. In the background is Ashley, also pregnant, due in about 3 weeks. She's looking great! The gender of her baby is a surprise, but it's looking like a boy.

More of the ladies. Stine and Arndt went into a laughing fit shortly after this picture was taken. Those girls!

Thank you ladies for coming and showering us! We are so lucky to have you all in our lives. A special thank you to our hostesses for a beautiful shower and to our Moms and Midge for traveling to shower us once again.

Week 32: A Large Jicama

I am not sure I know what a jicama looks like in its raw state. Wait, just googled it. Got it.

Nash currently weighs about 3.75 lbs. and is about 16.7 inches long. You know these are averages and we're short, so he's probably a little shorter. As far as weight goes, he's either right on target or a little bigger, because, well, ummm, I am a little bigger these days!

I went to the doctor earlier this week, and I had gained 6 lbs in 2 weeks! I am not getting this weight gain on my home scale, but that's not good at all. If you wonder how this possibly could have happened, see the post below and above this one. That's how. And it was worth it.

I hate to complain because this baby is all I have wanted for a long time. I am happy to go through the stresses and strains of pregnancy in order to get to hold and love Nash. I have to tell you though, this is not all roses. As of late, my back hurts like hell. My feet hurt, my ankles are starting to swell, and Old Man Tired has returned. He showed back up about a week ago. At first I didn't recognize this feeling. I told KP that I felt hungover, minus the booze. But then there was no denying it last Friday morning when I slept until 10am and then needed a nap at 2pm.

Also, we finished Lamaze classes this week. I am not sure that I want to deliver this baby. I mean, I really want him to be on this side of the womb, but getting him here is not something I am interested in. Why did they stop knocking women out totally? Not many medical practices from the 1950's are still in place, but I do wonder why they stopped that one. Can you imagine?

Doc: Ok, Amy, can you count backwards from 10 for me please?
Me: 10, 9, 8, sev (trails off)
A couple of hours later:
Doc: Good morning. Would you like to meet your baby?
Me: Oh, yes. I am a little groggy, but I sure would like to see that baby that I have no memory of delivering. Ahh, sweet baby. Thank you for causing me such little pain.

Okay, I get it. I want to be part of the birth process (or the majority of the birth process), but really, why does it have to hurt so much?

Me and the pugs, cuddling while we still can. When I nap, this is how we all fit on the couch: Mac on the pillow behind mine, Gus cuddled up to the belly, and Zeus (always with a dog toy aka a "baby") in my knee pits.

Me and Nash at 32 weeks (+6 days). I wore all non maternity clothes today (yoga pants and a sweatshirt), which explains why my clothes look stretched to the max. According to my scale this morning, I am +27 lbs. According to my dr, I was +30 on Wednesday. Either way, Christmas is next week and I will be + more than 30 by then!

Baby Shower Numero Dos

Last Weekend, Midge (Older Sis) and SueSue (Lil Sis) hosted a baby shower for KP, Nash, and I in Manvel. Weather casters predicted that it was going to snow in the ATX on Friday, so I hopped in the car on Thursday and headed over to Houston. Boy were those weather casters wrong! The ATX got very little snow, none that stuck, but Houston got the most I think I have ever seen there.

I stayed with Midge, Matt, and the boys. Midge was home sick from work and I still had my cold, so Mimi (my Mom) ran all of our errands (and got medicine and neti pots for her sick girls), while we tried to entertain two very excited little boys.

I worried that we would need to call the shower off on Saturday because of the snow. People in Texas cannot drive in inclement weather and it makes for a dangerous trek anywhere. But, the sun came out Saturday morning and the shower was on.

It was so great to see all of the ladies and girls that were able to make it. Our old neighbors from Whitehaven; our Aunts; some Midnight Margaritas; Mimi's dear friends; Midge's sisters-in-law; Midge's neices; and my sisters, Mom, and cousin were all in attendance. It was a beautiful shower, with the most heavenly truffles. I hear SueSue had quite an experience picking them up from a house in Bellaire that had a butler! Thanks sisters for a great shower!

The spread.

The aforementioned truffles. Delish!

Baby Nash's name was even on the goodies. So cute.

Some of the ladies.

More guests.

Having a drink (non-alcoholic for me, of course) and a laugh.

Midge's sisters-in-law.

We received awesome gifts, including the changing pad, bottles, tons of much-needed burp rags, a piggy bank, clothes, bibs, some of our favorite books, blankets, the soothing giraffe, sleep positioner, handmade pillows and booties, and an exersaucer.

Thank you so much everyone for spoiling us rotten! It was so nice to get to spend time with everyone before Nash arrives. Hopefully I'll get to make the rounds with him when he's a few months old as well.

Week 31: Four Navel Oranges

Four Navel Oranges. Huh. Try carrying around four navel oranges and supposedly that will be like carrying Nash, as he is now, at about 3.3 lbs. around for a little while. He's also more than 16 inches long.

Now, if you wanted to get an idea of what it feels like to carry around Nash, all of the fluid he needs to grow in, the 50% extra blood my body has produced, the extra water I am retaining, and the fat I have gained, you'll need to carry around 31 navel oranges. Yes, I did the math.

Nash has been moving like crazy. I guess there's still room in there. My back is starting to ache a little bit earlier in the day and I am starting to feel the pregnancy/cold hangover again. I am not requiring an afternoon nap again yet, but I am a bit sleepy in the afternoons.

We're still taking Lamaze classes and have signed up for a breastfeeding class. I hear KP is really going to enjoy that one! He actually is into (parts of) the Lamaze class. Hopefully I will be a nice wife and accept his guidance and help while delivering. The epidural should help that too. We also met the pediatrician this week. She said everyone who cares for the baby needs to have an H1N1 vaccine, so my Mom went out and got one lickedy split. I am still looking for one for KP. His mom and I already got them.

Below is a pic of me today at 31 weeks, 4 days. I have had multiple people (none who have birthed children) tell me that I look ready to pop. After taking inventory at the Meet the Pediatrician event the other night, I can assure y'all that women get much larger and swollen right before they are ready to deliver. I am 8 months pregnant, so yes, I have a belly, but ready to pop, I am not. This boy needs to put some meat on his bones, which translates into about 10 more navel oranges for me.

31 weeks, +26 pounds. Don't judge me.

The Big Reveal

I have been waiting on one thing or another for months. In the past week, our bedding came in, I finally organized Nash's closet, and I pulled together some shower gifts to make Nash's room look more cozy. While I am still waiting on a few things (pics of Mimi and Buddy, some accessories, a valence for the window made from the bed skirt material, and the glider we are going to borrow from the Bymans), Nash's room is now habitable.

Honestly, I love it! I have had such a blast decorating this room and trying to create a warm, fun space for our son.

So, here are pics:
The view into the room from the hall.

We found this vintage TV stand at a consignment shop. We had the paint matched to our fabrics and added new drawer pulls. This will be his changing table and dresser. We're also having a valence made from the same material as the bed skirt.

Here's a close-up of the bedding. I absolutely love it! RockyTop Designs on Etsy made this for us. Everything is so nicely tailored. All of the pillows (other than the white with leaves, which was made by RockyTop) were hand-made by Midnight Margarita Auntie Sharon.

Another view of the crib, and the swing. The glider will go where the swing is and the swing will make its way into the living room, I am sure. Also, Neck, the giraffe named by Davis, is in the corner to watch over our little Nash.

The closet. It is so easy to become obsessive compulsive about where everything goes. This nesting instinct is very strong. You should see the inside of the dresser. Everything is organized by season and size and has been washed, folded, and put away in its place.

Bookcase with toy storage. Our book collection is growing. Thanks to Luke and Davis, we have lots of toys already.

That's it. I am sure it won;t ever be in this much order again, but for now, I will just keep tinkering until it is perfect...or until Nash arrives and we're too busy to deal with decorating!
